5th Herd of Dairy Cows in Michigan: Afflicted by Bird Flu Outbreak

The H5N1 bird flu has been found in another group of dairy cows in Michigan.

The herd is in Ionia County, which has already had one group with the disease this year.

It was proven that the H5N1 bird flu had spread one day after Michigan's HPAI Risk Reduction Response Order, which told farms they had to keep quarantine perimeters up to date.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on May 7 that H5N1 has been found in dairy cattle in nine states, which is equal to 36 farms.

At least 220 people have been checked for the virus by city and state health offices since March. There has been one positive test so far from a farm worker in Texas who mostly had conjunctivitis.

State Veterinarian Nora Wineland said, "As we work with our federal partners to learn more about this virus and how it spreads, the steps being taken on Michigan farms to lower the risk of introducing this disease to animals need to be re-evaluated, improved, and made even better."

As part of the reaction to the disease in the dairy farm, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is working with the doctor to keep an eye on the animals' health and look into where the disease came from.
